Walter Street to Close Starting May 1

posted

(MADISON, Wis.)—As reconstruction continues on the Atwood Avenue project, Walter Street will be closed from Atwood Avenue to Johns Street until mid-June, beginning Monday, May 1.

“We are progressing well in the Atwood Avenue project,” City of Madison Project Manager Andrew Zwieg said. “This next road closure will allow the contractor to begin the infrastructure improvements at the Walter Street and Atwood Avenue intersection.”

The work will include new storm sewer installation, as well as water main, path and roadway operations.

There will be a local access detour for residents in the area, which includes taking Walter Street to Johns Street, then Dennett Drive to access Atwood Avenue. Vehicles traveling from the west or north should take U.S. 51 to Cottage Grove Road and take a right on northbound Atwood Avenue to access Olbrich Park or Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Also, pedestrian walkways at Atwood and Walter Street will be maintained.
In addition, Metro Transit will have its temporary bus stops at Atwood Avenue and Walter Street on the east/south side of the intersection. Pedestrians are encouraged to use the temporary crosswalk through the work zone to access it.

The entire project is slated to be completed by the fall of 2023.
