Upcoming Atwood Avenue Traffic Switch Happening Next Week

posted

(MADISON, Wis.)—Another traffic switch will take place on Atwood Avenue beginning Monday, June 26.

Traffic traveling northbound on Atwood Avenue will be directed to use the newly paved lane on the lake side of the street from Walter Street to just before Oakridge Avenue/Sugar Avenue. This is an extension of the lake side lane that vehicles have been using from Cottage Grove Road to Walter Street. Traffic will then weave back over to the other side of the street as it approaches Oakridge Avenue/Sugar Avenue.

“This traffic switch will let the project team continue constructing new infrastructure near the Olbrich Park Softball Fields and Olbrich Botanical Gardens,” City of Madison Project Manager Andrew Zwieg said. “The project is progressing well, and this traffic switch will help us get one step closer to the completion of the project.”

Traffic traveling southbound should continue to take the detour from Fair Oaks Avenue to Milwaukee Street to US 51/Stoughton Road to Cottage Grove Road.

The pedestrian walkways at the Walter Street intersection will also reopen. Vehicles, bikes and pedestrians should plan to use Walter Street as the main point of access to and from Atwood Avenue. Dennett Drive, Margaret Street and Olbrich Avenue will not be accessible from Atwood Avenue while the contractor builds new infrastructure at those intersections. Also, pedestrians traveling south toward Olbrich Park from Fair Oaks Avenue should use the sidewalk on the lake side of Atwood Avenue.

Lastly, private utilities continue to work in the project area, and Metro Transit will have temporary bus stops in place.

The entire project is slated to be completed by the fall of 2023.
