Latest Update
April 03, 2023
We are anticipating contractors being able to finish exterior punch list items now that the weather is finally turning to spring. Interior punch list of the gas hut have already been completed. The PV solar for the gas hut and the warm storage building will be installed during May.
Project Overview
This project will provide the third and final truck scale for the sand and salt monitoring program. Also included will be the installation of a fueling point for city vehicles serving the far west side of Madison. The fuel point will initially be constructed with 2 buried fuel storage tanks (one diesel, one gas), 2 dispensing islands (one diesel, one gas, others will be added in the future), and a utility building for power, network, and self-service fluids like oil, windshield washer fluids, etc.

August 23, 2022 update: The contract was awarded in January to Raymond Cattell as the General Contractor for the project. Primary sub-contractors to be Tri-North Construction, S&L Underground, Walt’s Petroleum, and Forward Electric. All of our heavy rains have not really slowed the project down very much since the overall construction schedule was based on the delivery date of the fuel tanks. Cattell started on the ground construction in late April thru mid-June by clearing the site of small trees and top soil and installing the new storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water supply piping. Cattell also worked on opening the new Yard Drive entrance and preparing the north circulation road and drainage ditching and piping. Late June through July saw other major utilities being installed as follows; City Engineering Construction Section installed the new Fiber Optic Duct for the site, MG& E relocated an existing gas main, and Alliant Energy installed the new electrical ductwork. The concrete footings and foundation walls for the gas hut were also installed. So far this month Cattell has begun the installation process for the elevated truck scale by installing the main scale foundation pad. The fuel tanks arrived Aug 17th and have been installed in the ground. Upcoming work in the next few weeks will be the rough-in of all buried fuel piping, electrical conduits throughout the site and the beginning of bringing in the base material in preparation for final grading and paving.
October 19, 2022 update: Since the August update the construction of the gas hut building has been completed, the buried fuel dispensing piping and equipment has been installed as have all buried electrical, fiber, and data lines. Concrete pavement for the gas islands was completed at the end of September and the asphalt paving was completed last week. The scale foundation, approaches and pan have also been installed. The contractors are currently working on the bio-retention basins, pavement shoulders, and spreading top soil in preparation for seeding, and finishing the interior of the gas hut including installing plumbing fixtures, electrical, and data equipment.
Over the next couple of weeks the bio retention ponds will be completed (planting will be done in the spring), topsoil will be seeded. The gas hut will be fully functional, scale equipment will be installed, tested, and the scale certified. Area lights and security cameras will be installed, and the fuel dispensing equipment will be installed. The PV solar equipment for the gas hut roof has been delayed.
