Pavement markings are used to communicate with road users about roadway alignment, vehicle positioning, lane designations, exits and other important driving-related information.

Crosswalks

Types of Crosswalks

The City has two standard crosswalk types, Standard and Continental, to help draw attention to areas that pedestrians and bicyclists cross.

  • Standard crosswalks are the most commonly used crosswalk in the City and are made up of two lines.
  • Continental crosswalks are an upgraded version of the standard crosswalk that provides more visibility but requires more paint. Traffic Engineering carefully selects crossings with high pedestrian and bicyclist activity for these higher visibility crosswalks

General Maintenance

Traffic Engineering crews re-paint crosswalks on the following timeline:

Central Isthmus Area - annually

East side - even numbered years

West side - odd numbered years.

Nighttime Crosswalk Program

  • Most of the crosswalks in the City are painted during nighttime/overnight hours to reduce the impacts of street closures and provide safer working conditions. The Nighttime crosswalk program is typically staffed by summer hourly employees.

Restriping and painting lane lines

Traffic Engineering re-stripes all streets that are designated for paint on an annual basis

  • Traffic Engineering utilizes water based acrylic paint for these markings

Annual Epoxy Program

Traffic Engineering issues an annual contract for the reapplication of Epoxy paint markings on major streets.

  • Epoxy is a more durable pavement marking that typically lasts up to five years, it is composed of an epoxy resin and curing agent which chemically reacts to form a tough, chemical resistant coating.
  • Utilized on major streets and with new street projects to allow for more durable markings.

Lane Designation Markings

Green Markings 

Maintaining green markings for high trafficked biking movements

  • Green markings are applied with a thermoplastic paint that is composed of solid resin, pigments and other additives to allow for durability and slip-resistance. Markings are heated onto the pavement.

Red Markings

Maintaining red markings for transit lanes

  • Red markings do not necessarily indicate that the lane is transit exclusive, road users should pay attention to signage when determining whether or not to use these lanes.
