2024 Hispanic Heritage Month
postedAs a Puerto Rican and the First Latina City of Madison Council President, I am delighted to invite you to celebrate the rich diversity of our Latinx/e communities. We contribute to the vibrant fabric of Madison with our unique but shared experiences, delicious foods, language, customs, and music.
As I reflect on the significance of this month, I share my deep-rooted love for Ser Boricua with you. The island of Puerto Rico, with its rich culture and a strong sense of community, is where I was born and raised. It is the place that instilled in me the values of public service and the importance of family and friends. Growing up, I had the privilege of spending time with the older generations, like my three maternal great-grandparents, Mama Moncha, Papa Monse, and Mama Yeya. I was Abuela and Abuelo's first grandchild; the strength, passion, and responsibility to care for those in need were values they instilled in my parents and passed on to me. Those values are always present, guiding me in my work and life.
Today Council, honors and recognizes the economic, cultural, and social contributions that Hispanic/Latinx/e peoples have brought to the City of Madison and our nation.
