Transportation Improvement Plan

Each year, the City of Madison updates its Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).  As part of this, staff analyze the city’s streets with respect to:

  • Street Condition Rating
  • Sanitary Sewer Condition
  • Proposed Storm Sewer Upgrades
  • Water Pipe Core Risk
  • Pedestrian Needs
  • Bicycle Network
  • Transit Network
  • High Injury Network & Safety
  • Equity Areas

Potential projects can be prioritized based upon the above factors as well as other factors such as coordination with private development projects.

Sometimes a severe utility condition may accelerate a project, such as a broken or failing sanitary sewer. City department staff, the Transportation Commission and the Board of Public Works review the proposed TIP. The Mayor and City Council finalize the TIP with proposed projects in the adopted City Capital Budget.
