Central District: Alcohol & Parties

Alcohol intoxication continues to be a major concern of the Madison Police Department. Typical calls for service as a result of excessive use of alcohol use include sexual assaults, fights, vandalism, and thefts. Underage drinking and the use of false identifications to gain entry into bars put students at risk of receiving citations for city ordinance violations, but more importantly becoming a crime victim.

In an effort to reduce the number of persons being victimized by alcohol related crime, (i.e. sexual assaults and batteries), the Madison Police Department uses a number of enforcement strategies. The most common enforcement tools are citations for violators of city ordinances relating to alcohol. Fines range from $100 to $1006. Some violations require a mandatory court appearance.

Through our educational efforts, the Madison Police Department wants to facilitate voluntary compliance. However, officers are prepared to issue citations and/or arrest violators to achieve a safe and orderly environment In the downtown area.
