Property Taxes

We will process all tax payments postmarked on or before December 31 as having been paid in that year.

Real Estate taxes can be paid in full to the City of Madison by January 31 or can be paid in four installments: January 31, March 31, May 31 and July 31. 

The 2023 State of Wisconsin Act 12 exempts personal property beginning January 1, 2024.  Personal Property is generally defined as the equipment, furniture and fixtures used to run a business.  Exempt personal property will not have a 2024 assessment or 2024 property tax bill.  

Payment Options

  • Online

    Pay online by checking account, savings account, credit card, or debit card. You can schedule payments for a future date, view your tax payment history, view your assessment information, and manage bills for multiple properties. There is a service fee of 2.45% of the tax paid for using a credit or debit card, or a minimum fee of $3.50. There is no fee for using a checking or savings account.

  • Mail

    Make checks payable to City of Madison Treasury and mail the bottom portion of your property tax bill with your payment to:

    Note:  When paying with an escrow check, endorse the back of the check. If your escrow check exceeds the tax bill amount, the overpayment will be sent to you within six weeks.
