Special Assessments

Special assessments and charges are levied for improvements made and services provided to real property. They are considered to be liens against the property and are due from the property itself; regardless of ownership. Special assessments and charges are billed during the year and if unpaid, become part of the real estate tax bill issued to the property.

The City of Madison provides Special Assessment letters for parcels within the City.

How to Request a Special Assessment Letter

Requests for special assessments must be made in writing or in person at the City of Madison Finance Department. Requests may be mailed or emailed to:

Fees

On January 16, 2018, the City of Madison Common Council approved a $25.00 fee, per parcel, for Special Assessment Letters. The fee is effective for letter requests received February 1, 2018 and thereafter.

For letters requested by mail or in person, the fee must accompany the request. Checks should be made payable to City of Madison – Treasurer. We will bill monthly for emailed requests. Letters are typically processed and sent within 3 to 5 business days.
