About Alder Muralidharan (MGR) Govindarajan (he/him)

Alder Muralidharan (MGR) Govindarajan (he/him) was sworn in to serve as Alder for District 8 on April 18, 2023. His district includes the entire University of Wisconsin–Madison campus and the surrounding south-campus neighborhoods—east of Randall Avenue, north of Regent Street, and west of Park Street.

During his term, MGR has focused on advancing affordable housing for students, expanding access to mental health resources, improving transportation infrastructure, and enhancing pedestrian and bike safety across Madison. He has also worked to implement forward-thinking sustainability policies and strengthen the role of students in local decision-making—ensuring they have a real voice in shaping the city’s future.

MGR earned his bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies and Political Science from UW–Madison. As an undergraduate, he served as the Legislative Affairs Chair for the Associated Students of Madison, UW’s student government. In that role, he collaborated with state lawmakers and the Office of Governor Evers to secure increased funding for student mental health services and elevate affordable student housing as a statewide priority.
