Urban Forestry Planting 855 Trees in Fall 2024

posted

Urban Forestry’s fall planting season began on Monday, October 21, 2024.

Our crews will be planting 855 trees from 25 different species along City of Madison streets this fall.

The variety of species was selected by the City’s trained arborists to ensure a diverse and resilient canopy that can thrive in the urban landscapes where they will grow and benefit us all.

As you may recall, on May 21 we had a severe storm that caused significant tree loss around Madison.  Over 400 street-side trees were lost to this storm.  Of the 855 trees we are planting, 175 of them will be to replace street trees we lost in the May storm.  Additional replacements related to the May storm will come in later replanting seasons where appropriate.

The fall planting will occur throughout the city.  Overall, the fall planting is expected to continue into November. Upon the conclusion of the fall planting season, Urban Forestry crews then return to pruning and other tree care operations through the winter months.

In the spring of 2025, there will be a new round of tree planting.

New Tree Care in the Fall

Please follow the new tree care advice on the City of Madison Urban Forestry website for trees planted in the terrace in front of your home.

In the fall, it is important that you continue to water the tree until the ground freezes.

We have had very little rain this fall.  You can help your tree survive by keeping it properly watered before the winter freeze.
