• D19 Exploring the 2025 Budget Series - Session 2: Community Development Division and Non-profit Funding, Thursday, October 3: Join me for the second of three sessions. We'll meet in person at the Oakwood Village Auditorium. We'll begin with a brief overview of the budget deficit and need for multi-year plans. Next Jim OKeefe, Director of Madison's Community Development Division, joins me to take a closer look at how CDD supports affordable housing and community building efforts and the effects budget cuts may have. You will be able to make comments and ask questions.  Then we will turn to initial 5-year plans with and without a successful referendum, and agency proposals for cuts. Since service reductions may ultimately be required regardless of referendum results, I'll explain how you can provide me with your input on cuts. • Poison Hemlock Warning: A landscape contractor for the Lake Mendota Drive project brought in soils contaminated with seeds of various noxious plants including poison hemlock. Every part of this plant contains the deadly toxin famously used to execute the philosopher, Socrates. Casual contact is not dangerous, but ingestion or contact with an open wound can be fatal. A warning notice is being mailed to area residents. The contractor will be responsible for removing the poison hemlock plants.
• Water Main Flushing: Water main flushing continues this coming week, including portions of Indian Hills, Spring Harbor and some neighborhoods west of Whitney Way.

Events

• Cherokee Marsh Phragmites Workday, Monday, September 30: Assist in keeping the high-quality wetlands in Cherokee Marsh free from invasive phragmites. Volunteers are needed to use twine to tie stalks in bundles. We will then cut the stalks above the twine and treat the cut ends.
• Capitol View Farmers' Market, Wednesday, October 2: The Capitol View Farmers' Market is held weekly on Wednesdays (3:00-7:00pm) from late May through mid-October. Join us each week for great local vendors, live music, food carts, and special activities from week to week.
