Community Academies
What is the Community Academy?
The Community Academy is a program designed to give the public a working knowledge and understanding of the values, goals, and operations of the City of Madison Police Department. The objective of the Academy is to help build a positive relationship between the Madison Police Department and the community, while improving the lines of communication with the members it serves. This experience allows community members the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of our Police Department.
What Should I Expect?
Through lecture, demonstrations, and interactive hands-on learning, the Academy will cover the following:
- Organizational Structure and Staffing the Streets of Madison
- Community Partnerships
- Use of Force
- Mental Health
- Investigative Services
- The last date is to be determined based on input from attendees!
Who Can Attend?
City of Madison community members who:
- Are at least 18 years of age
- Have an interest in learning about MPD
- Who have completed an application and waiver of liability
- Committed to attending all listed dates

How Do I Apply?

Applicants must print a copy of both the application and waiver. Once both forms are completed, mail or email to the Community Outreach Unit, whose information appears at the bottom of the application.
All applications go through a review process to help establish a pool of diverse candidates. The remaining applicants are evaluated to establish the final group to participate in the Community Academy. All applicants will be notified with an outcome of the application process.
The criteria for screening applicants will include (but not be limited to):
- City geographical areas districts/distribution of neighborhoods
- Review of application
Candidates who are accepted into the Academy will be contacted and given more information. The candidates must commit to attending all of the sessions. If an emergency arises and a candidate cannot make a session, they must contact the Coordinator. Unexcused or numerous absences may result in dismissal from the Academy.
