Wood Mulch Information

All Loads Must Be Covered

All loads of mulch received from the transfer station must be covered or enclosed in a vehicle so it can be safely transported.

Mulch service will be denied if you do not have the ability to cover or otherwise contain the mulch to prevent it from blowing out of your vehicle during your trip away from the mulch facility.

You can choose to cover the loads a tarp or other options, like in the back of an SUV.

Emerald Ash Borer Information

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade and Consumer Protection has certified our brush processing site for safe shredding of ash trees. This means that mulch coming from our site will be free of the emerald ash borer. You can be assured that our mulch will not transmit the emerald ash borer to your property and our mulch can be moved anywhere in the State of Wisconsin.

Free Wood Mulch

Small quantities of wood mulch will be available for Madison residents at 121 E. Olin Avenue only and lasting through the year until the winter snows return.

When entering the facility, the free mulch is located to the left along the fence.  There is a sign that identifies where the small free mulch pile is located.  Please pay attention to the signs and remain mindful of your surroundings so you do not obstruct heavy equipment operating at the facility.

Do not approach the booth near the scale or enter the processing area beyond the booth.

The supply of mulch is limited and it is not guaranteed to be available for residents when they arrive.

The free pile of mulch for residents will be restocked when possible.

Please note that other mulch at the site is reserved for other city processes, such as keeping trees alive while they await planting in the fall, and also for bulk purchasers, like area farmers.

free mulch in certain city parks (Starts may 24, 2024)

Starting around 12:00pm on Friday, May 24, 2024 wood mulch will be available at the below City of Madison park for free.

The site is self-serve, and you will need to bring your own shovel and buckets.

Mulch is not guaranteed to be available when you arrive.

Do not drop your brush off at this locations.

If you have brush, and do not wish to wait for curbside pickup, take it to a Streets Division drop-off site.

Free Mulch Location

  • Elver Park - Far west parking lot near the softball diamonds.

(Mulch was previously available at other parks, but as of June 20, 2024, it is only available at Elver)

Mulch Details

Mulch will be available and restocked as crews and mulch are available.  Mulch is not guaranteed to be there when you arrive.

We are aware this will be popular. We will monitor the sites and we will restock them as often as staffing and mulch availability allows.

Keep in mind crews will be quite busy performing other storm related cleanup work.

Informing us that the sites are empty will not hasten their refill, nor will we know exactly when they will be refilled again once the sites are emptied.  We will refill them as soon as we can.

The mulch provided at these locations here is created from the tree debris created by the May 21, 2024 storms.

Safety Note

Elver Park may have a Streets Division crew creating mulch at certain times. These operations will not always be occurring, but it may happen from time to time as needed.

The industrial machinery used to grind wood into mulch is very loud and quite large. Depending on the direction of the wind, it can also be generate blowing sawdust when the process is ongoing.

Please be mindful of your surroundings if this machinery is operational while you are getting mulch from one of these locations, and keep your distance from the loader feed brush into the machine and stay back from the industrial grinder.
