National Preparedness Month: Tornadoes

Tornadoes can happen any time of year, but they are most likely to occur between April and September in Wisconsin.

Tornadoes can happen with little warning. That’s why it’s important to be signed up to receive alerts.

Protecting Yourself from Tornadoes

At Home: Know where to go for safety. If a storm shelter is not available, get to the lowest floor or basement of your building. Stay away from outside walls and away from any windows. Use your arms to protect your head and neck.

If you’re in a mobile home or trailer, have a plan to seek shelter somewhere safer.

In Your Car: It is not safe to be in your car during a tornado. Find a place where you can shelter indoors, if possible. If the tornado is visible and you cannot seek indoor shelter, you may be able to drive out of the tornado’s path by moving perpendicular to it. Otherwise, park the car as quickly and safely as possible, stay in the car with your seat belt on, and duck below the windows. Cover your head with hands and a blanket, coat, or other cushion. Avoid seeking shelter under bridges.

Outside: Watch for flying debris and protect your eyes from blowing dust, dirt, and other small items. Move inside as soon as possible.

After A Tornado

If a tornado has happened, stay aware of any updates afterward. Avoid power lines, wear appropriate attire and equipment to handle debris, especially glass, metal, and trees.

Seek medical attention if you are injured. If you’re sick, contact your healthcare provider and shelter in place unless it is a life-threatening emergency.

Call 911 for any emergencies, including damage or debris that pose a risk to life safety.

Do not call 911 about non-hazardous damage or debris reports unless instructed to. Pay attention to local media and City or County communications for instructions regarding non-hazardous damage and debris.
