Declared Snow Emergencies

During a Declared Snow Emergency, everyone must follow alternate side parking. This includes people who park in the Snow Emergency Zone.

The City of Madison declares a Snow Emergency when we need to plow all residential streets. We usually do this when there are three or more inches of snow on the roads.

A Snow Emergency usually lasts for two days, but we may extend it if needed. We will always declare a Snow Emergency before 9:00pm on the night it will take effect.

Snow Emergency Zone

If you park in the Snow Emergency Zone, you only need to follow alternate side parking during a Declared Snow Emergency.

The Snow Emergency Zone is the downtown isthmus area and the Regent, Dudgeon-Monroe, South Campus, Vilas, Greenbush, Bay Creek, Sherman Terrace, Tenney-Lapham, Marquette, Darbo-Worthington, and Atwood neighborhoods.

The area includes all of Alder Districts 2, 4, 6, 8, and 13, and the part of District 5 south of Campus Drive and east of Franklin Avenue. The zone is defined in Ordinance MGO 12.1335(2).

Posted Parking Rules

Follow all posted parking rules during a Snow Emergency.

Many streets within the Snow Emergency Zone also have posted Clean Streets/Clean Lakes parking rules. During a Declared Snow Emergency, follow both Clean Streets/Clean Lakes and alternate side parking.
