Building Inspection is open to the public by appointment only.

Enforcement
Building Inspection enforces specific ordinances. For minimum housing, we enforce Chapters 27, 32. We conduct inspections in response to:

Complaints. Most of our cases come in as complaints.

Referrals. Other agencies or alders may refer issues to us that they see while doing their work.

Field observations. At times, an inspector may see a violation while in the field.

Systematic inspections. Inspections of properties in a blighted area.
Property owners must correct code violations.
For exterior issues, anyone can report a problem. For interior issues, only current tenants can report a problem. For indoor inspections, an inspector will call you to schedule an appointment.
To set up a complaint, we need the property address and the issue. For interior issues, we need a tenant name and number. You can call us at (608) 266-4551 ext. 4 or use report a problem.
Next steps:
- Within a couple business days, we will inspect the site.

If we find a violation, we issue an Official Notice. The notice lists how to correct the issue(s) and gives the due date.

We schedule a reinspection after the due date.

If you have fixed the issue, we will close the case. If not, we charge a penalty and schedule a new due date. We may also refer the case to the City Attorney's office for prosecution.

We repeat Steps 3 and 4 until the item is corrected.
