In the fall of 2015 Madison received Platinum Bicycle Friendly Designation by the League of American Bicyclists and ranks as one of the best cities for biking in the United States. In both 2019 and 2024 the City renewed its Platinum Designation.

The City of Madison was noted as one of the “Cities on the Rise” for improvements over the last four years.
Gold Walk Friendly Community
In 2021, Madison was recognized as a Gold Walk Friendly Community. The City is also recognized as one of the safest cities in the United States for pedestrians according to Smart Growth America and the National Complete Streets Coalition. The City is working to become a Platinum Walk Friendly Community when it fills out the application to renew the Walk Friendly designation.
