Licensing

Weights and Measures compliance sticker

Businesses in the City of Madison must license all weights and measures devices, such as:

  • scales
  • gas pumps and meters
  • scanner units
  • timing devices
  • yardage measures

Businesses pay a license fee for each device or unit. Our Weights and Measures (W&M) staff inspect devices on an annual basis for compliance. See license application for specific fees.

You can also review general business advice from the City and from the State of Wisconsin.

Conforming Devices

The device seller should provide a copy of the Certificate of Conformance (COC). The CoC says the device is okay for retail use.

Licenses and inspections protect the public and increases trust in the business. It also helps businesses make sure their methods are correct.
